21. Interface ID

• There are many ways to assign 64 lowest-order bits of the IPv6 unicast address:

  • 48-bit MAC address (Ethernet Address) expanded into 64 bit field

  • via DHCP

  • manually configured

  • auto-generated pseudo-random number

  • more methods will exist in the future.
