Healthcare Information degree students should focus their CIT-11 research
on the field of their study.
This will help you to spend your time on relevant subjects while completing this course.
The Fluency with Information Technology textbook is required.
There is an optional Office XP bundle that should be purchased if you prefer to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint on your home computer or a laptop.
Reading this week:
CIT-11 Syllabus and course policies
Read textbook Chapter 1.
Reading Chapter 2 is part of the next week assignment, but you may find it helpful to read it before completing this week's homework assignment.
Read several articles about the history of computers.
If you do not have the book yet, you can still do most of the research online.
Browse links for related articles on Links and Tutorials web page.
This week we shall focus on a word processing.
You may already have some experience in creating word documents.
Information about open source word processors, Microsoft Word and WordPerfect are available at the Links and Tutorials web page.
Most of us are comfortable with Microsoft Word at the introductory level.
However, now is the chance for us to use an online word processor from Google.
Google has a tour in its help section that you can use to familiarize yourself with their word processor capabilities.
The name of the assignment is Software history and word processing.
The topics of research include:
Why do we need software?
How has software evolved over time with the advances of hardware?
Healthcare students should look at this from the perspective of the health care industry.
(For example, you might include a discussion of hand-held computers in healthcare.)
The paper you write for this assignment should be at an introductory level:
Start your exploration of the topic early.
Most importantly, express your own reflections and views about computer history.
Optional: What would you like to see computers do in the future? Why?
This assignment relates to computing and word processing.
Your writing will be based on articles you read and research.
(the same format will be followed in future assignments, as well.)
In addition to researching and reporting on the information, you need to embed in your writing a few word processing skills.
Topics to cover in your document:
Why do we need software?
How has software evolved over time with the advances of hardware?
Use references that you find on the Internet.
Be sure to site the references that you used!
You can use references from Links and Resources web site, or ones that you find on your own. (I apologize for the fact that there may be some dead links there it is hard to always keep them up to date.)
You may pick someone to collaborate with you on your work.
The paper should be approximately two pages long double-spaced. (This is not a limit, just an attempt to give you an idea of what I am looking for.)
The paper should be written online using Google Docs & Spreadsheets. (This allows you to write a paper and save it online, so you can access it from home or work or school.
You will have to create a Google account.
Part of this assignment is to figure out how to navigate Google Docs & Spreadsheets.
Note on quality: You should not be concerned about all Google Docs features, and the fact that the features may not fit and align perfectly in the way that you would normally write in a paper will be acceptable for submission this time.
Please figure out a way to use the features listed below.
Word Processing Features that must be used in the document:
Underline some text
Bold some text
Put some text in italics
Create a list with bullets
Create a list with numbering
Centering text
Single spacing the text that you center
Highlighting some text
Changing the color of some text
Changing the font and size of some text
Save local copy of your document in PDF format.
The resulting document should be attached to the email message with the proper email subject line:
CIT11 Homework 1
The email must contain your last name (mandatory!) and first name (or at least first name initial), otherwise I will not be able to identify who you are.
Send your email to the instructor: Igor Kholodov Igor.Kholodov@bristolcc.edu
Good luck!
